Coach Bell has won four straight AHSAA Class 5A state championships while coaching the girls basketball team. He has made eight trips to the state semifinals and winning five state titles. He has achieved many Coach of the Year Awards from various organizations such as the Birmingham Tip-Off Club, Birmingham City Schools and Alabama Sports Writers Association. Bell was awarded the Frank “Pig” House Award from the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Coach Bell was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in the fall of 2016.Birmingham Athletic Partnership recognizes his positive leadership throughout his life and career as a coach. Birmingham Athletic Partnership continues to help and support Coach Bell and his team at Wenonah. Bell lives life to the fullest each and everyday and thanks God for his blessings. He is an inspiration to those who know him, play for him and just meet him. He continues to live by the motto, “Faith, Not Fear”.
“Birmingham Athletic Partnership would like to thank all of the city schools who continue to partner with us to make this program successful. Our goal with BAP is to make every effort possible to help these student athletes succeed not just for today but for the future. These experiences and opportunities to be a part of a team help to guide and give direction. BAP is always a phone call away. BAP is eager to continue to strengthen and grow this program for the benefit of our future student-athletes of the Birmingham City Schools. We have included some quotes from coaches and athletic directors.”
